And to answer this in the same way I have just answered another query: Yes. No. I don’t know. There is an open comment section below for those who want to egg us on, you know.
And I’d like to. I still have some ideas. And there have been a sizable number of potential contributors knocking on the door. The interest is there. The audience is there. I am checking if the will is there as well. I still don’t have an answer for that. That’s the thing.
We took a break after Volume 2 Issue 2 ostensibly to catch our breath. I also had some projects of my own I wanted to finish. I’m not an agented writer. I, too, have to slog my way through the submission process (just like most people I know, fellow sloggers laboring in perfect obscurity) which, as many of you know, can become a full-time job in itself.
On the one hand, there is a real thrill to publishing someone for the first time. And I’ve had people who got their first acceptance from us stay in touch with me and tell me what they’ve accomplished since. On the other hand submission periods are often just a reinforcement as to why I don’t have many close friends who are writers. And I’ll leave that as it is.
Writers are an eclectic lot. You can publish 5 things by a guy for a year and then not take a 6th thing and he stops talking to you forever. You can reject work by a person 10 times and there they are again with the 11th next time up bright and fresh as a new banana and couldn’t possibly care less about the 10. Knowing how people can be, when I submit work to editors I try to minimize the difficulty and cooperate with everything the publication wants from proper formatting to following rigid and arbitrary instructions to get through their hoops. That’s usually when I run across an editor who is, basically, an asshole.
And I’ve been happy in my secluded suburban hermitage where people in the neighborhood just know me as that retired guy in the barn-red house, working on my own projects every morning and making progress with my own stuff unbothered by some writer’s huffy middle-aged drama or another writer’s interminable displays of suicide chic hipster bullshit. “Unfettered and alive” I believe the song lyric goes. And yet…
There is a lot of work out there that needs to be seen. A lot of new names that haven’t been in print yet. I wish we could provide that crack-in-the-door for new people just recently in the game.
